You can su, then edit /etc/inittab in the line that is currently set to
# default runlevel id:3:initdefault:
Change the "3" to "2", and the next boot will be to the console mode.
This true of 6.4, but I have read somewhere that in 7.1 a lot of stuff moved close to the standard and the runlevels have changed. I don't know how this will effect /etc/inittab.
As Joost pointed out, this isn't exactly what I'm after. I got the other message, though, and accordingly went looking for the 'ConsoleMode='-line in /opt/kde2/share/config/kdmrc - didn't find it, so I added one: ConsoleMode=/sbin/init 2 - didn't work... tried a complete reboot - still no luck. I recently 'upgraded' my KDE, so I still have the original kde directory, so I did the same thing in this kdmrc - didn't work although I think that this is the file that is actually read, it still has no effect adding this line. Am I missing something here? Is there some significance to the fact that the line isn't there, perhaps? /jon
