You can su, then edit /etc/inittab in the line that is currently set to
# default runlevel id:3:initdefault:
Change the "3" to "2", and the next boot will be to the console mode. This true of 6.4, but I have read somewhere that in 7.1 a lot of stuff moved close to the standard and the runlevels have changed. I don't know how this will effect /etc/inittab.
