Okay - this is seeming to be the problem. Yet the line in rc.config says "START_INETD"="yes".
When I run:
rcinetd start
I get bash: rcinetd: command not found.

Is is possible that the inetd is somehow not installed properly?
/usr/sbin/inetd belongs to the package inetd-1.0-52. The quick check is: rpm -qa |grep inetd If it yields no results that means you have no inetd installed. -Kastus
