If you are using llilo (LInux LOader) the following will work.
After the reboot and your machine is coming back up you will see a prompt LILO:
at this prompt you can specify a name for the system you want to bring up and it's run level. E.g. LILO: suse241 2 The "suse241" could be the name you gave to a SuSE distro with the 2.4.1 kernel (though you could also just call it "mysys". Then the "2" after the name will cause the system to boot to run level 2.
You can configure lilo in YaST. The configuration file that YaST produces and lilo uses is in /etc/lilo.conf (in my system).
Thanks for the answer. I *do* need to get a better feel for configuring LILO related stuff. This isn't quite what I wanted though. I want to be able to tell the system how to reboot from the command which reboots it. I seem to remember seeing something, either from SuSE or from the KDE which will allow me to select the subsequent boot kernel or OS from the KDM. My guess is, if that can be done from KDM it can be done from the command line. I don't like having to watch the system on the way up. I'd rather go grab a beer or someting while it reboots.
A script to alter /etc/inittab? Or maybe there's some option to rdev that will let you select the runlevel (since the kernel does take the init parameter)? That's all I can think of... I've never heard of KDM allowing you to select in advance which kernel to boot. The only way that I can think of how it could do that is to rerun LILO each time, which isn't exactly the best idea.
