Subject: I'm Stumped
I have two machines: AbNormal running SuSE v6.4 with a functioning modem and
Igor running Windows 95 with a functioning printer.
There is no problem when both machines are running Windows 95, except for the
fact that both Win95 machines are plagued by a denial of service worm which
locks up my ISP connection after a couple of thousand bytes that I can't get
rid of without draconian measures (i.e. reformat all of the drives and
reinstall everthing - the typical MS solution to problems). The worm doesn't
affect Linux and AbNormal is internet capable.
AbNormal talks to Igor via Samba without any problems, except that I can't
seem to get the printer to work from AbNormal (\\Igor\HP). Just this evening
I discovered that I can telnet from Igor to AbNormal, but for one problem. I
can only log on to AbNormal as a user because he won't accept my root
password of Enter ( that is I elected the no root password option when I
installed v6.4). Now as permissions have remeained an unpenetrateable
mystery to me I work locally in Linux as root. Consequently, when I telnet
in as a user I wvdial won't work - I get the message 'can't read
/etc/wvdial.conf: permission denied'. I found, however, that I can log as
su, after which I can dial out with wvdial. I would imagine, however, that
this is a rather large security risk.
What I would like to do is be able to use Netscape and Eudora on Igor and
dialing out to my ISP via the modem on AbNormal/SuSE 6.4. It would also be
rather useful if I could use the printer from AbNormal.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
