Subject: Inspiron 5000e fails to install SuSE 7.0
Hello!
I am a Linux newbie, and I just bought SuSE 7.0 Professional to replace
windows98 on my likewise new Dell Inspiron 5000e laptop. I was cruising
through the YAST2 installation, and got stuck on the Desktop settings
page. I tried nearly all possible combinations of resolution and
colors (the 2 options on that page), and am not allowed to progress
past that screen unless I turn off the X11 installation. If I don't
turn of X11, I get a message saying "Please test your chosen video
mode..." I press "Test" on the GUI, the screen goes dark for a second,
and then returns me to the same screen asking for resolution and color
choices.
I've read something here about needing Accelerated X instead of Xfree
or about needing a new driver from Xi Graphics, but I don't really
understand all this stuff.
Also, my ethernet card and modem are not being recognized in the final
step of the SuSE installation.
My system is 850Mhz, 256 MB RAM, 15" Super XGA+ TFT screen (1400x1050),
ATI Rage Mobility 128 video controller and 16 MB of SGRAM. I will be
using this system for molecular graphics, so I'd like to use the full
resolution of my display screen.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Jennifer
