One alternative you might try is to dump the file contents to a pipe mknod <thepipe> p (muck around with size) dd if =<the file > of=<the pipe> & <=== async tar cf <theoutput> <thepipe> I have used this to get around file size limitations loading large data files with sql loader (also limited to 2GB). I have processed data files up to 23G in size this way (actually only once), with sqlloader reading off the pipe.
Anyway should work for tar.
This looks interesting. If gnu tar doesn't do it I'll give it a try. I'm a little confused on the <=== asycs from above. Is this part of the command? Does the following command look right? $mknod -p /dev/pfifo 8192 $dd if=largefile of=/dev/pfifo & <=== async tar -cvf "tape" /dev/pfifo I'm not sure if your <=== async is part of the command or not and is this all one command??
