Great news (for me, anyway)! I'm finally getting to replace my worn-out old Cyrix 300 CPU with an AMD K6-500.
I'm about to do a processor upgrade on my fastest machine: from a Cyrix P150+ to an Intel Pentium 166 MMX. No joke... ^^^^^^^
The mobo will handle it OK, but I'm wondering about the kernel (standard SuSE 6.4). Since it was installed with the Cyrix, will it automagically handle the AMD? I know there is some sort of 'stepping routine' that the Cyrix needs, and I wonder whether this is set in the kernel on install, or is it called at bootup time only if needed?
There shouldn't be any problems whatsoever, especially if you're using the stock SuSE kernel.
