So I tried to set up proftp this weekend and found that I couldn't get it to work. I downloaded it, compiiled, installed, changed inetd.conf and restarted but couldn't ftp to my box. Are you using tcpd to start the ftpd from inetd? Something like this? ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd proftpd ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Then you'll have to setup /etc/hosts.{allow,deny}. See hosts_access(5).
