SuSE has used RPM's since 1995..so I would think it was cool with it ;) You can find SuSE RPM's all over the net..or go to ftp.suse.com as well. Most RPM's that are generic i386 RPM's work. YaST2 will be able to do updates as you say..for now you can download them and use YaST1 to install them. You can consult your reference manual for info on how to do this.
