The basic idea is that you have to tell your dvi to ps converter (or pdflatex if you create pdf file) to use type 1 fonts. The rive is dvips for teTeX. If you go to the /var/lib/texmf/dvips/config directory, you find t config.ps file which is the configuration file for dvips.
From here there are two ways to proceed. Either you add the corresponding map files to the list of type 1 fonts (p +bsr.map for the standard compute modern fonts) or you regenerate the psfonts.map file after editing and running the updmap script.

Is there a SuSE user out there who can tell me, clearly, how to enable Type 1 fonts when generating .ps files from latex? I have checked the document at

But I am afraid I could not work out how to actually do it from this document. Most of the documentation appears to assume you already know what they are (and are not) telling you.
Thanks
