Matthias, I looked up the URL, you are right about their being a problem with name-based virtual hosts ..and mod_ssl ..Under the circumstances what is the best option ? Hi, look at http://www.modssl.org/docs/2.6/ssl_faq.html#ToC46 There seems to be a problem with this combination.

I've recently compiled a new Apache with PHP4 and mod_ssl. I have created a Test certificate too .

At this moment i don't need to enable SSL . But I'd like to keep that option open for the future ..I've tested that mod_ssl works for the default ../htdocs with ../bin/apachectl ssl

Right now this is how my old httpd.conf is organised :

Sec.1 Global Environment Sec 2 Main Server Config : Config common to all virtual hosts Sec 3 Virtual Hosts : 3 Virtual Host containers.

There are 2 addl sections in the new httpd.conf :

SSL Global Context SSL Virtual Host Context

Can I use the defaults in these sections ?

I want the answers to these questions before I change the new httpd.conf to point to my web directories . Is there anything else I need to look out for ?
