Will KDE2.0 overwrite kde1.x in /usr ? How do you know this? Where is
Jesse, Christian,
I would just like to clear this up. My guess is that neither of you have
been directly involved in packaging KDE 2 for SuSE or Red Hat, and neither
of you were directly involved in decisions on which directories the RPMs
would use to install the software. Is this right?
OK, now I would like to understand what you have each said.
Jesse, you are saying that SuSE currently installs the KDE 1.9X betas to a
different path from KDE 1.1.2. Yes, I know that. What I want to know is
whether the "final release" KDE 2.0 will still install to a different path
to KDE 1.1.2. My current assumption is that yes, for SuSE, it will install
to a different path, because
(1) (My guess) SuSE relies to some extent on KDE apps and doesn't want to
see lots of apps breaking at once AND/OR
(2) (another guess) SuSE would not have made the RPMs for the betas do
something radically different from the RPMs for the final release,
otherwise the betas would not be testing the right thing.
Jesse, is this right? Do you agree with my assumptions and my guesses? Do
you know anyone from SuSE who knows the whole story?
Christian, I'm not 100% sure of what you are saying here. By "the latest
CVS build of KDE" and "KDE went into /usr/local/kde", do you mean 1.1.2 or
1.9X beta? Did earlier versions of Red Hat come with KDE 1.1.2 installed
into /usr/local/kde ? Are you implying that Red Hat will install "final
release" KDE 2.0 to the same path as it had used for KDE 1.1.2 ? If so,
what has been done to test KDE 1.1.X apps against the KDE 1.9X libraries?
Christian, do you know anyone form Red Hat who knows the whole story?
Jesse Marlin
documented? Which developers or packagers have said this?
No. Because the SuSe version uses different RPM keys and a different path
as well. Look at the package yourself and you can verify that will not
clash with anything.

I am currently running KDE1.94 side by side with KDE 1.1.2 on SuSE Linux 7.0.
KDE 1.94 is in /opt/kde2 KDE 1.1.2 is in /opt/kde
Red Hat 7.0, compiled the latest cvs build of KDE from src's. KDE then went into /usr/local/kde -- \ Christian A Strømmen / \ Number1/NumeroUno @ Undernet - Email: number1@realityx.net / \ Web: www.realityx.net - Cell: +47 911 43 948 / Live your life by your dreams, not by the limits of reality... -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq
