Paul, Thanks for taking a look at this. I really expected some new bits to be out there in the RC1 directory. I had been downloading and compiling the KDE2 source every day for a few weeks. When I received my 70 distribution I decided to leave the updates to SuSE so I don't mess up their configuration. I already have the beta 5 on my box. That may be why my alsa didn't work. I just loaded OSS and kept on martching. At home alsa actually did work quite well. My SBAWE64 gold has never sounded better. Oh well, I've got lots of other work to do, and Stefan K has some exams to deal with, so perhaps patience is in order. Steve paul.c.leopardi@ac.com wrote:
Steven,
I've checked and you're right.
Which version of KDE 2 are you looking for? If it is Beta 5, the general instructions for KDE 1.94 at
http://www.kde.org/announcements/announce-1.94.html say that you should use one of the subdirectories of
ftp://ftp.kde.org/pub/kde/unstable/distribution/2.0Beta5/rpm/SuSE/ according to your architecture.
There are specific instructions in a README file which is easy to miss:
ftp://ftp.kde.org/pub/kde/unstable/distribution/2.0Beta5/rpm/SuSE/README
The specific instructions do not mention one crucial point: you need to have an up to date SuSE Linux system before you install KDE1.94. For both SuSE 6.4 and SuSE 7.0 this means upgrading to the latest ALSA. Otherwise you will have libasound.so.1 as an unresolved dependency needed by kmulti2.
I have sent messages to suse-linux-e@suse.com and posted a bug to feedback@suse.de about this last point.

There has been a readme file sitting at:
ftp://ftp.kde.org/pub/kde/unstable/distribution/2.0RC1/rpm/SuSE
It says "These directorys contains KDE 2.0 Release Candidate 1 packages for the SuSE distribution."
Unfortunately I cannot see any files other than that in the directory. What's up with that?
TIA,
Steve
