Let me throw out a suggestion. Copy the .config file someplace safe. Say $HOME. Then reinstall the SuSE provided src. Compare the .config file that SuSE provides [which I assume is what they use to build the kernel] with the one you saved. Just use the diff command. See if the areas that are giving you problems are different. Even if you don't want to compare the two reinstall. DON'T do a make proper to start with. Just start with make menuconfig and just delete the options you don't need.
