hi i downloaded hotjava browser 3.0 and installed it. but when i run hotjava on the xterm cmd line, i get all sorts of errors about fonts, ending with "failed to load scripting engine" . i can see the splash screen, that's just about it. there is a process called java in the memory that takes up 25 % of cpu and 2% of memory for 20 secs, and just dies away. i use kaffe, and kjc,the java version is 1.2.2 . i dont know what's the problem. can you help ?
I run HotJava 3.0. on SuSE 6.4. The Java Version I use (for HotJava 3.0) is 1.1.8 from Blackdown.org. I also have 1.2.2 but read someplace (I think on Suns site) that Hot Java 3.0 will only run on 1.1.8. SuSE 6.4 came with 1.1.7, thats why I got the 1.1.8. SuSE's Java is Blackdown's btw. I also have IBM's 1.1.8, but also read somplace that Blackdown.org's is more stable ( I am not aware of any difference ) both run fine for me. You have to untar the jdk (and/or jre) into /usr/lib on SuSE. Make the java link to jdk1.1.8_v1 and jre link to jre1.1.8_v1. By changing the link it is possible to run any version of Java. I have the jdk1.1.7(SuSE), jdk1.2.2(Blackdown), jdk118(IBM) and jdk1.1.8_v1(Blackdown) all sitting happily in /usr/lib. By changing the soft link from java (or jre), I can run any of them. HotJava 3.0 only runs properly with jdk 1.1.8. btw(and nothing to do with Java), My Netscape 4.75 (SuSE's) runs fine and so does the Netscape 6.0 I downloaded from Netscape. Somehow we are giving the impression to newbies that these programs are unstable (unusable) on (SuSE) Linux. I find them more stable than IE in WinNT (my opinion), so I also run Netscape 4.75 on WinNT too. Maybe I'm a Netscape junkie :) I found Netscape 6.0 on WinNT slow and horrible!! (I removed it). Opera has a LONG way to go yet!
