I have SB 1024, as well. I loaded emu10k1 by entering this line in /sbin/init.d/boot.local: modprobe emu10k1.
In this way, I've experienced the best sound, so far, with 6.3, 6.4 and 7.0 Pro. In KDE, the sound is perfect, but when starting a KDE2 session I can't get any sound either.
I also wellcome any advice. KDE2 looks interesting and it would be sad if the sound issue should be a reason for avoiding it.

Hello again
Further to my last, in the KDE Control Centre under Network, Talk Configuration, Announcement there is the list of system sound files which on hitting Test sound OK. However, unlike KDE 1 there is no corresponding list of actions to corellate the sounds too.
Any clues or am I missing the obvious such as no-one has system sounds working in the beta 5 release.
Stu
I am having this problem, too. Sounds can be applied under system notifications, but they do not seem to get saved. Sound in KDE2 has been a problem in 6.4 and now with my new install of 7.0. BTW, I removed all the KDE2 rpms that came with SuSE 7.0 and installed v1-94 final beta. Much nicer and Kmail works.....it did not with the originally installed rpms and I do so like the threaded message feature!
