The actual message is "host unreachable". What is being done is at the cisco router, which is intercepting all mail port requests and sending them to some web-based mail program they run. So I can only use mail in the local subnet I'm in, ie I have to ssh in and use Pine to get and send mail. Everything from the outside is blocked.
Okay I'm still confused. How is you changing your sendmail.cf going to matter to the router? The only thing I can think of is they don't want you leaving relay on. I was going to say maybe they want you to use the router has an outgoing mail server but since they are willing to open the ports up that doesn't make sense. The other thing is who sends you that error message? I'm guessing you are trying to send a message out and your internal machine can't get out? Or is it an external machine trying to get in?
The Webmail program they use is nice, and unlimited, but it is totally out of my control. The tech guy said that there was something in sendmail.cf that needed to be changed on my machine, but he wasn't sure how to implement it. Then once that sendmail.cf change was made, he could open up the cisco router to let mail port calls thru to my ethernet card. So I'm quite in the dark as to what is happening.
Sounds like they want something particular done. Have them tell you what. Then we can figure out how.
I am looking at qmail as an alternative, as that is what everyone is talking about now.
If the ports are closed then it won't matter what's running on your end. I'm guessing they want to make sure you aren't an open relay but they should tell you that. FWIW if all they want is to make sure you aren't an open relay then I think all SuSE sendmail since 6.1 defaults to no relay.
