There are exactly as many as you like[Note 1] or exactly none[Note 2] depending on how you look at it. ;-) The file /etc/rc.d/init.d/init.d is a symbolic link to . (the same as to /etc/rc.d/init.d). Probably this link exists because something likes to look at /etc/rc.d/init.d/init.d/ but SuSE does not want to put an extra duplicate directory in there.
