Has anybody been experiencing lockups from the latest NVIDIA drivers from their website. I am running SuSe 6.2, and updated to the latest XFree86 4.0, and then installed the new drivers. And now it locks up on me pretty consistently, but rather than undoing what I did I decided to install 6.4. And I was wondering if anyone was eperiencing lockups with the GeForce 256 and the latest XFree86 4.0. The card and drivers were working very well until I updated.
Yes I have had the same problem you describe. I sent a message to the list last week but no-one seems to have answered. I updated X to v4 and built the drivers from source and when I try to startx the screen is blank. Fortunately the keyboard still works so I could ctrl-alt-del and not whack the hdd with the reset button. Before this though, I had complete lockout and had to reset the pc. I did find one oddity- the /var/log/xerr.0.log (I'm not quite sure if that is the logfile name) reported an error that the nv_drv.o file had duplicate symbols after the nvidia_drv.o file had been loaded, so I boldly moved the nv_drv.o file from /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/ to a ~/delete/ directory. Then I ran startx again and instead of a lockout a blank screen, but the kbd still worked, so I could ctrl-alt-del.
I know this does not solve the problem, but at least there are now 2 minds pondering the problem...
If you have any further inspiration I would be eager to hear it.
I did the upgrade and so far so good. I had some trouble compiling the kernel module at first. It was complaining about tqueue_lock, which I finally deduced was related to SMP, so I just downloaded kernel 2.2.16, compiled it, and rebooted. The module then compiled and installed fine. There are a lot of grim bugs in the FAQ. I had Heavy Gear II working great with the older drivers, but now it is known bug that changing resolutions in the game will lock it up. Good Luck! Here is an excerpt from the FAQ that you might find useful: 6.5.4 AGP support This software release does contain support for AGP on many common AGP chipsets. However, not all chipsets are currently supported. If your chipset is not yet supported, let us know what kind of chipset you are using and we will try to add support for it in a future driver release. 6.5.5 X locks up when starting The most common cause of X locking up on start-up at this point appears to be AGP. Although we have worked hard to provide quality AGP support, problems might still exist due to the amount of variance in motherboards and AGP chipsets. For this reason, we've included an override in the XFree86 Configuration file. The following addition to your XF86Config file will disable AGP: # your pre-existing screen section Section "Screen" ... # adding this option disables AGP. # a "1" will enable AGP (the default) Option "NvAgp" "0" ... EndSection We have also received reports from some users that the X server locks up when starting up, on TNT2 cards. We are trying to isolate this problem internally. Disabling AGP fixes the problem for most people, but not for everyone. We're still debugging this to find where we might have other bugs that are causing these lockups. In addition, on systems with 32MB of RAM, it is possible to fail initialization due to some RAM requirements of our kernel-loadable module. If X fails to start up, sometimes it is sufficient to just try running it again. We recommend installing more RAM in your system for better performance, especially when running 3D (OpenGL).
