You can do it all in one sweep with the following:
bzip2 -cd <filename>.tar.bz2 | tar xvf -
which will extract the contents of the package to the current directory leaving the package in it's tar.bz2 form. Some will opt for Ben's way, others will opt for this way, neither is right or wrong. All depends on which way your most comfortable with in the end.

How about tar -xIf <filename>.tar.bz2
