I think they'll start to converge. KDE is better at the moment in respect to stability and networkability. GNOME is better for configurability and is attractive to users and companies who want openness. I use KDE because I love the browser/file manager concept, but GNOME will have that soon. KDE's ace in the hole might be Klyx using the Qt toolkit and the resultant plethora of applications which have a KDE look and feel. I've a feeling the theme engines will converge, and that KParts will become a Bonobo component or vice versa, which will allow component interoperability. I can already dock KDE apps (like kppp) into the GNOME panel, and KDE2 can use GTK themes. The lines are blurring. In a year or two people will be running both desktops and they won't even know it. Of course, people will then *really* complain about bloat...
I'll have to go read that article. I sure hope not, IMO, I think KDE is much much better. Well, until Corel, Mandrake, SuSE, and Caldera all switch to Gnome as the default desktop environment, I don't see this happening.
