Hi Folks,
In case there's anyone out there who's a wiz with a soldering iron (or knows about a suitable adaptor which could be bought):
I have an HP X-term monitor Model A1097C.
This normally connects to an HP Xterm box, which has a mere 16MB RAM which is insufficient for heavy X work (e.g. it can't take Netscape at all , and even 'gv' is only partially handled); it's only really suitable for light "xterm" work.
However, the quality of the display is superb, and I am wondering if it is possible to use it as the monitor for a PC (running SuSE Linux, he says quickly, to get this somewhat on-topic).
The signals are sent by a 3-core cable with three separate connectors at the monitor end, one each for Red, Green and Blue. The monitor syncs on "Green".
As far as I can see, there is no alternative connection possibility.
The other end of the cable fits the standard socket at the back of a PC video card. However, the signal lines are not what is required, and the "sync question" is the big one: you just get mush if you simply plug it into a PC.
If anyone has fudged up a trick to get this to work properly as a PC monitor, I'd be most obliged to learn the details.
With thanks, Ted.

You may want to take a look at these pages: http://historia.et.tudelft.nl/+AH4-marcj/fixed_freq/ Btw, you can easily expand the memory of the x-terminal. I am using one right now (HP Envizex p series, with an A1097c monitor) running netscape and kde with a picture in the background. I used some old 8Mb simms from an old 486 machine to upgrade the x-terminal to 24 Mb. It uses standard SIMMS.
