I already found the solution. Apparently the new kernel was "fitted" with framebuffers enabled. After compiling a new kernel without framebuffers, everything worked fine.

After my upgrade from Suse 6.3 to 6.4 I can't get X-Windows to work properly. It used to work fine with 6.3 on a Compaq E500 laptop. Graphics adapter is a ATI 3D Rage P/M Mobility AGP 2x (rev 64).
After the upgrade the screen keeps scrolling upward when I start X with the old configuration. When I start up sax, it automatically detects the card and it scrolls upward all the time too. Any ideas??
When you upgrade to a newer version, it's supposed to be better working than the old one. But so far upgrading form 6.3 to 6.4 is a misery. I need to relink a lot of broken symbolic links by hand, Apache won't startup when booting and now X has problems too. Sometimes I wished I stuck with MacOS ;-)
