oops..I am a noodlehead to day..fired off an answer and missed part of the topic. Please look in /etc/rc.config for this reference and make sure it says yes.. # Do you want USB support to be started? # Some notes: # * USB is currently experimental. It may as likely help you to get # things # running as it might cause problems. # * You may be able to get along without USB support, if you just # have an # USB keyboard and the BIOS does emulate a normal keyboard ... # * USB config is done via /etc/rc.config.d/usb.rc.config # START_USB="no" * Ben Rosenberg (brosenb@suse.com) [000728 20:19]:
You should not need any "driver" for this under Linux. You have to find out how your DSL/ISP wants you to connect..whether it's via DHCP, PPPOE or if they are giving you a static ip. DSL modems are not the same as analog modems...you are just connecting through ethernet, so if your ethernet card is configured and your method of logging has been figured out .. then it should work.
You should send us more info as to what ISP and what method of connecting your isp uses, then we can help you get it all squared away :)

I'm running SuSE 6.4, with GCC 2.95.2, on an HP P3-800 computer. My question is how to install my speedstream external USB modem in linux. The auto detect for modems didn't find it, and I heard that I need to recompile the kernel, or something like that. I'm a linux newbie, and I don't know much about kernel compilations, so I was wondering whether there is an easier way? None of the setup tools provided in SuSE 6.4 worked, and I couldn't find any specific drivers on Alcatel's website. Any other ideas?
