I've seen this many times but I keep forgetting to ask: What does "non-contiguous" mean? I'm sure many have seen this if fsck has to check the filesystem after a power out/crash/etc
AFAIK, this is the same as what windows means by fragmented. Think of it as a measure of how neatly your files are placed on your disk, the smaller the number the neater the organization.
