I figured this would happen -- someone would ask what I did to make it work and I noticed that the answer to my query is not on the SuSE list archive :(. I had a message somewhere around here from someone who gave me some tips that pointed me in the right direction, but I can't find it at the moment. If I remember correctly the gist of what was going wrong was that the suse raid tools (.9 type) and the raid patches (.4 level) were conflicting with one another. The way I got around this was to load a clean 2.2.16 kernel source from ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/ and then patching it with the raid patches from: http://people.redhat.com/mingo/raid-patches/ I also had to download the reiserfs and sensor patches since I was using those as well. I think that the SuSE raid tools will work with a kernel compiled above, but I see that I downloaded and compiled but did not install the set from mingo, but I might have played around with them to initialize the drive. The raid devices autodetect on boot and work very smoothly. http://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/~neilb/oss/raid/ also had some other information that I found useful. I was thinking of writing a mini-mini-howto to document what happened. I would be interested in your experiences so maybe we could work together to help others out in the future. I've been up and running since 1 Jun as /proc/mdstat shows: # cat /proc/mdstat Personalities : [linear] [raid0] [raid1] [raid5] [translucent] read_ahead 1024 sectors md0 : active raid1 hdc1[1] hdb1[0] 1058304 blocks [2/2] [UU] unused devices: <none> -Mark Enzenberger ----- Original Message ----- From: Keith Gibbons To: SuSE Linux ; queue@arcticzoo.com Sent: Sunday, June 25, 2000 8:02 AM Subject: Re: [SLE] Raid Hi there, I've just been trawling the mail archives looking for info on raid 1 when I saw your message. I have exactly the same problem as you. Did you get it sorted and if so - how? I have two Quantum 20G drives and I want to mirror hda3 and hdc3 but I get the same error when I execute the "mkraid /dev/md0" command as you do. I have removed the mdutils package and re-installed the raidtools package as I thought they may be conflicting with each other. I went to d/l the most recent raidtools only to find that it was the most recent on the 6.4 CD. Any help would be most appreciated.
