Have a look in /usr/src/linux/Documentation/devices[.txt .ps]? It will tell you what char-major-108 is. My first guess is that you may have support compiled into your kernel rather than as a module. If that's the case then just edit modules.conf to have a line that reads. alias char-major-108 off Tim PS. IIRC it's ppp, but then I've been wrong before :-)
This error appears in /var/log/warn when I do init q
Since it is in warn I am not flying into a mad panic, but enquiring minds want to know :)
