GNOME will no longer display applets in the panel or capplets in the Control Center. Starting an applet or capplet in a terminal gives the following errors: Gtk-CRITICAL **: file gtkcontainer.c: line 730 (gtk_container_remove): assertion `widget->parent == GTK_WIDGET (container)' failed. Gtk-WARNING **: invalid cast from `(unknown)' to `GtkWidget' Gtk-CRITICAL **: file gtkwidget.c: line 3493 (gtk_widget_get_style): assertion `GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed. Gtk-CRITICAL **: file gtkctree.c: line 5132 (gtk_ctree_node_set_foreground): assertion `GTK_IS_CTREE (ctree)' failed. I just upgraded to SuSE 6.4 from 6.1. And applied all of the pathces from the FTP site. Applets worked fine in 6.1. I thought maybe it was caused by old libraries or headers. So I uninstalled all of the GNOME, gtk, and shlibs5 packages. /opt/gnome/bin and /opt/gnome/lib were pretty much empty. I did a "find /usr/lib -name '*gtk*' -print" to look for old gtk files. Nothing suspicious turned up. Re-installed all of the GNOME and gtk packages. But applets still won't run. Has someone else seen this? Any ideas on how to fix it?
