Why does something like "man ls" not work? Drilling down through the SuSEhilfe pages is a lot of work when "man" is all I want. If I install non-SuSE packages (e.g., des), those manpages work like a charm but something like "man pppd" is a dead loss.

check the MANPATH. The pages moved (file hirachy standard) to /usr/share/man.
