[SLE] Monitor adjustments vs. xvidtune

Sometimes it's possible to adjust the size and other properties of the X screen either by using xvidtune or by using the controls on the monitor itself. (Same goes for Sax, I assume, though I don't use it myself.) Does anyone have advice on how to determine which method is better for a particular adjustment, or even how to use the two methods in combination for the best results?
