Exactly, you have to add the 'modprobe emu10k1' line in your boot.local to initialize it....this isn't really documented in the emu10k1 docs as far as I can recall, but whenever I add a modularized driver and it's giving me a problem on install, I check the scripts to see if it's being 'modprobe'd and if not, I add the line to boot.local.
