I did a nslookup and got the following: "*** Can't find server name for address 192.168.1.1: No response from server" "*** Can't find server name for address 205.248.113.2: No response from server" The 192.168.1.1 is my mail server. 205.248.113.2 and 205.117.215.10 are my ISP's nameservers. My resolv.conf is as follows: /etc/resolv.conf ---------------- search jrhmn.org search myisp.com nameserver 192.168.1.1 nameserver 205.248.113.2 nameserver 205.117.215.10 ---------------- I don't have named running. Should I maybe either start named or remove the reference to 192.168.1.1 from /etc/resolv.conf? I was also getting a "No root nameservers for class IN" error so I edited /var/named/localhost.zone and added a reference to 192.168.1.1 but I'm not sure I did that correctly but I don't get the error now. Oh well, is there anything here that I did right? It means relaying was denied since since it was unable to lookup the host. I haven't been following this thread, so forgive me if I restate what you have been told, but are you running a DNS? If so, can you lookup web1.jrhmn.org on your DNS/hosts. If yes, and it is your host, can you reverse lookup your host. Also do you have a reference to your host in sendmail.cw? or Aliases? Thanks to all with the advice! I tried all the recommendations. I am backing up just a bit and am trying to email from host/host on my network. Here's the error:
Output of /var/log/mail: ------------------------ May 14 22:04:49 guardian sendmail[230]: IAA01794: to=jhoepner@web1.jrhmn.org, ctladdr=jhoepner (501/100), delay=13:38:39, xdelay=00:00:00, mailer=esmtp, relay=web1.jrhmn.org., stat=Deferred: Name server: web1.jrhmn.org.: host name lookup failure
I'm wondering about the "relay" and "Name Server" portion of the error. I have a catching dns running but not named (using /etc/hosts) so why am I still getting a host name lookup failure?
Thanks! jrh

Try setting sendmail to deferred delivery.

I'm setting up my first network with (2)SuSE6.2 machines, (1)NT and (1)Win95. I am currently working on getting sendmail running. For starters, I'm trying to send email from linux/linux box's (not messing with win stuff yet). Also trying to send/fetch from my ISP account.
My network is jrhmn.org, my ISP mail account is tvsw.org
Here's my /var/log/mail. I cannot send email to any other host on my network or to my ISP account. I'm assuming that sendmail must be installed on all my hosts (for local email delivery) and I then configure one host to deliver/fetch my email from my ISP?
Thanks! jrh
