I'm new to the world of linux(installed it May 1, 2000). With a few calls to installation support my base system seems to work fine. I'm running SuSE 6.4 on an AMDK6-3-400, Asus P5A, 128MB RAM, dual boot with Win98 (seperate hard drives), HP8100i CDR, SMC network card connected to the home network/cable modem, etc. Problem #1 The minor problem is that even though I can play a CD and sound comes through the speakers, any type of audio file on the computer does not produce sound. I have a Montego II card with the Aureal 8830 chip so I went to http://linux.aureal.com and downloaded the latest drivers. I installed them as directed in their README. I got error messages about "unresolved symbol" According to their README: if you get "unresolved symbol" errors during the install, rebuild your kernel with sound support (soundcore) built in (not a module). I've searched the SuSE 6.4 Linux book but can't find any information about "built in" sound support. How do I check and see if sound support is "built in" Problem #2 I've figured out how to use apache web server, I wanted to install TkApache. I went to their website and checked the prereqs. http://eunuchs.org/linux/TkApache/TkApache_content.html Seems that I have to have at least: Perl 5.004+ (no problem as I see that 6.4 installs 5.005) Perl::Tk (found this package and installed it) Data::Dumper How do I check and see if "Data::Dumper" is installed? I assume it is not since I tried to install TkApache and get no response. I know that these problems probably seem minor but I'm trying to learn. The answers are invaluable to me.
