I've got a new Dell 5000 laptop and I'm having trouble getting sound out of it using Alsa. I'm running SuSE-6.3 which carries an old version of Alsa which doesn't support the Maestro sound card, so I got the latest version via Freshmeat.
Following the ALSA-HOWTO, I load the modules using 'modprobe snd-card-es1968' and 'modprobe snd-pcm-oss' and all the device files appear as expected. When I try to 'cat largefile.txt > /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p' I get an error saying "cat: write error: File descriptor in bad state".
What am I doing wrong?
Is there support for that card in the kernel? I don't remember.
Because I have a laptop with a ESS Solo-1 card that alsa said
it recognized but would fail to set up properly. I finally
compiled the kernel with the driver for that card in it and
it works great. Not as a module. Someone on the laptop
howto pages said if I did it as a module then I'd have to
put a single line in modules.conf.

Try putting "alias sound maestro" no quotes in modules.conf
and comment out the alsa lines at the bottom.
