I am using kdm for logins on this 6.4 machine and it always defaults to 8 bpp. I would like it to be started at 16 bpp ( 24 slows down performance a bit ) and have the users sessions started at 16 bpp also. Is there a file I can set this in? I have to set up X using xf86config and edit XF86Config afterwards because I have an old monitor and a crappy vid card. I have tried commenting out the 8 bpp section for my video card of XF86Config and also tried setting the resolution higher than the vid card supports for 8 bpp color depth. Both result in X not starting at all when I boot to run level three. I have tried and X works if I start it from the command line using "startx -- -bpp 16". It looks sweet BTW, I didn't know linux could look this good. I have tried searches on man pages for this to no avail. I would like to thank everyone for the info on switching to OSS for my CMI8330.
