I gave up on trying to use HP's WJA for (Red Hat) Linux (only). I tried to do some of the things suggested in the mailing list archives, and I can't seem to get them to work. What do I need in place for this to work? I assume I need some queues such as
ascii|lp1|PS_600dpi-letter-ascii-mono-600|PS_600dpi letter ascii mono 600:\ :lp=/dev/null:\ :br#9600:\ :ty=ixon -imaxbel -ixany -ixoff -crtscts:\ :rm=:163.123.178.7:\ :sd=/var/spool/lpd/PS_600dpi-letter-ascii-mono-600:\ :lf=/var/spool/lpd/PS_600dpi-letter-ascii-mono-600/log:\ :af=/var/spool/lpd/PS_600dpi-letter-ascii-mono-600/acct:\ :if=/var/lib/apsfilter/bin/PS_600dpi-letter-ascii-mono-600:\ :la@:mx#0:\ :tr=:cl:sh:sf: #
Replace the lines "lp=/dev/null" with "lp=163.123.178.7:9100" and remove the line ":rm=:163.123.178.7:\" completely. This will print directly to the jetdirect using the filters specified. If you use rm=ipaddress (which should basically work with all newer jetdirect boxes) the print jobs are sent to the jetdirect using lpr protocol. In this mode lpd assumes the filters are on the remote machine and not on the local machine and thus they are not run. As a Jetdirect doesn't contain any filters, you can only print files in the printers native format using this mode. Make sure you installed lprng instead of lpr_old (the default) as only lprng supports direct printing to port 9100 on an jetdirect. If I remember correctly it is included since SuSE 6.3.
