You might want to make those ;s into &&s:
make dep && make clean && make modules ...
</SNIP> Ta for the tip.
If any one of the commands fails the others won't get executed. (What happens to your existing setup, for example, if "make modules" fails and you do a "make modules_install"?)
It falls over! - Though it never has... :o) I got this compilation routine from Linux Answers magazine here in the UK. Always worked with no problems so far... but they're infamous last words aren't they?! Any better ways are a plus in my direction!!! I always keep meaning to set up some sort of script to do all this. Not that I recompile just because my processor usage isn't being used much... just handy for those tweaks.
I always fully compile my kernel with the following commands:
make dep;make clean;make modules;make install;make modules_install;make bzImage
