It's hard to tell from your post whether you think the machine is crashing, or just bogging down under load to such an extent that it becomes unusable. Fire up an 'xosview' before you start anything else, and if possible configure the window manager to keep it on top. This allows you to see graphically how much CPU is being used, how much memory is being used and a couple of other useful things. It may well point to your problem.
Gasp, Help! Linux is freezing like (gulp) Winbloze! After running a huge amount of apps in an xwindow session, my mouse started to freeze or
get incredibly sluggish. This has now progressed to the point of the ascii command line interface freezing. Everything seems to boot fine but after logging in and executing a command, it freezes up. I'm running the maximum amount of swap partition. I'm running suse 6.1 with
kernel 2.2.7 on a K6 233 with 128 Mb Ram, 4.3 gig HD, ATAPI cdrom, EIDE VIA Apollo chip set, PS/2 3 button mouse, Creative Labs Graphics Blaster
