Dear Graham,
thanks for your answer. Here are the additional informations you asked for.

The other thing to check if the serial ports are on the motherboard. Use command cat /proc/tty/driver/serial to list the serial devices. Extract from my machine shown below.
After the start: ################################## serinfo:1.0 driver:4.27 0: uart:unknown port:3F8 irq:4 1: uart:unknown port:2F8 irq:3 2: uart:unknown port:3E8 irq:4 3: uart:unknown port:2E8 irq:3 etc. ##################################
after typing
: ################################## serinfo:1.0 driver:4.27 0: uart:16550A port:3F8 irq:4 tx:0 rx:0 CTS|DSR|CD|RI ----------------------------^ -----------Clear to Send --------------------------------^------- Data Set Ready ------------------------------------^--- Carrier Detect --------------------------------------^- Ring They are the RS232 Control line status. I notice that there is no baud rate set for this port. What lights have you on your modem? I think they should be the same as above.
1: uart:unknown port:2F8 irq:3 2: uart:unknown port:3E8 irq:4 3: uart:unknown port:2E8 irq:3 etc. ##################################
Well, as I don't know what are these parameters after uart, port and irq, maybe you can tell me whether it is ok or not. The modem doesn't react, so something must be wrong. If somebody has further ideas what I could test to find the mistake...
Now to my error messages in /var/log/messages:
Checking /var/log/messages showed some strange lines: 1. I have no SCSI drive 2. Module block-major-48/72??
In /etc/modules.conf make sure you have the following set
# only used for Mylex or Compaq Raid as module alias block-major-48 off alias block-major-49 off alias block-major-72 off alias block-major-73 off
# The serial devices should be set as follows alias char-major-4 serial alias char-major-5 serial
I had a look in my /etc/conf.modules ( you twisted it, I assume?) and there I find
alias char-major-4 serial alias char-major-5 serial
This is good, but in the row of
alias block-major-xx yyy
it goes only up to 47 = pf. There is no 48 or even 72.
I found an overview in /usr/src/linux/Dokumentation/devices.txt and there it has the following entries connected to my strange error messages in /var/log/messages:
8 block SCSI disk devices (0-15)
48 (char SDL RISCom serial card) block Reserved for Mylex DAC960 PCI RAID controller
72 (char Computone IntelliPort II serial card - alternate devices) No block !!
Well, as I understand this, it tries to load the modules for a SCSI device (block-major-8) and a RAID-Controller (block-major-48), which I both don't have. Additionally there is the undefined (block-major-72) ???
The other thing you don't mention. Have you recompiled the kernel?
No, i just used everything right 'out of the box'. No recompiling or messing around with modules. Do you have an explanation how this can happen then?
Bye Dirk
I did not read your message properly ( a bad hadit of mine). I'm using SuSE 6.3 and the /etc/conf.modules is now basically replaced by /etc/modules.conf. The settings I gave you for conf.modules may be incorrect for your version of SuSE. Try setting in the /etc/conf.modules the following line alias block-major-48 off and then reboot and see if it stops the error messages. I will have a think on what else you can do to get the serial ports working. I seem to remember that there was a config file for setserial somewhere but it seems to have disappeared in SuSE 6.3. In that file I had to fiddle with some of the options to get the serial ports working. Can't remember exactly what was wrong, but I had recompiled the kernel.
