howdy, i am getting "unpacking of archive failed: cpio: read failed - Success" and "unpacking...: cpio: bad magic" while loading packages from my SCSI CD-ROM to my IDE hard drive. I am doing a NEW install on a NEW hard drive. i have installed in the recent past on the same system with a different IDE hard drive. My system is an OLD laptop, running AMIBIOS dated 06/06/92. These are removable hard drives; the NEW drive is an IBM Travelstar DBCA-206480 (6480M) that i got from CSO(http://www.computersurplusoutlet.com) and the OLD drive is an IBM Travelstar DHAA-2540 (540M). The bios is able to recognize the geometry of the new drive and the install proceeds as normal until it gets to the BIG files, then i get the cpio errors. the red cpio error appears then the install exits with error 1. The DMA is disabled as per the FAQ, as is the PIO set to mode 0. The cable worked on the OLD drive and i checked the tech-specs at http://www.storage.ibm.com/techsup/hddtech/table.htm and everything seems to line up. When i first got it out of the box i noticed that the drive RATTLES, like the head is not parked. My old drives DO NOT RATTLE. is this normal, or a sure sign if you know how to read it that the drive is FUBAR? SO, my question at long last for those of you that are still with me is this: how can i confirm or refute my suspicion that this drive is in need of replacement? or, is there a way to get it to work? thanks, -ryan ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
