I've noticed that the system slowly creeps to a crawl when using acroread on anything with a significant ammout of pages (50+) most notibly on the samba manual, the IBM/SuSE RedBook by Lenz, and a few others (probably many more but those are the ones I frequent :) )
Have you noticed or anyone else noticed this behaviour with acroread?
It's Acroread's page cache that's eating up your memory. You can turn it off in File/Preferences/General.
