In the /etc/modules.conf are the above lines commented out or not? If you have recompiled the kernel with the serial routines compiled into the Kernel then I think you need to set them off as below
alias char-major-4 off alias char-major-5 off
If you are using modules then they should be set as follows
alias char-major-4 serial alias char-major-5 serial
