1. mount your hard new drive to /other 2. move /home and everything in it to /other so you get: /other/home 3. cd / 4. ln -s /other/home home
Now when you do: cd /home you will magically get transported to /other/home transparently.
Tada.
The only problem you will have is permissions. Last time I did this everything reset to root.root!
If anyone says otherwise let me know cos I'd like a better solution myself!
I use the following, which I got from the Tips-HOWTO, to make the move. # (cd /source/dir && tar cf - . ) | (cd /dest/dir && tar xvfp -) Here the contents of /home and /other will be the same with permissions intact. Then edit fstab, do the appropriate umounts, mount the new partition on /home and you're done. Notes: If the old /home was not a separate mount it will have to be cleaned out. I also like to make sure the copy is good before removing the original. Tim
Actually the solution I have today was install a new 17Gb hard drive, reinstall linux and restore my backups! A lot neater. :op
