There are several ways. You can install a service on nt to print directly to the jetdriect box. Doesn't need fiddling with apsfiler and virtual printers on the linux box. Done that, you can allow (on the NT box) "public" access for that printer. This solution doesn't requre linux at all. The printer driver is not needed on further clients.
JetDirect card in it. I could have all the users install the Jet Direct drivers directly on their NT boxes. I would rather not have everybody running their box as a print server. My understanding of NT printing is that the server provides the drivers to the clients when the clients print. Currently I have my NT box set up as a member server on the domain, and I have the HP JetDirect software installed on it. I then share the printer out to the other NT clients. What do I do in Linux to accomplish this? Is it easy?
Ok, I should have read better. ;-) It's not as bad. You need samba and a configured network printer. The network printer can be set up in yast. all you need it the ip-address and the port (it's the raw port). This will configure a remote printer. This printer is "exported" by samba. (say //sambaserver/netprint) All your clients need to do is connect to it via network neighbourhood. You need the HP-XXX driver locally on the all NT boxes, since linux doesn't know about it. The other solution requires more work on the linux box, a virtual local printer that sends it output to the network printer via apsfilter. In that case, you'd install a postscript printer on all NT boxes and run the printing output via the network through apsfilter converting to PCL for your HP-printer. Again, as always you'll need a printer driver on the NT machines. This solution doesn't make sense IMHO for your application. It's same as above, but more complicated. There is an article in the SDB for the latter solution, but only in german. I shall translate and post it to SuSE, since these questions pop up frequently. I think, the manual talks about this as well. Juergen
I'm only serving about 6 users. I want to remove NT and install a real OS, such as SuSE Linux. I don't want to leave my friend high and dry without a printer. I also don't have a lot of time to spend trying to figure this out. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
