With regard to servlets/PHP, servlets are server side by definition. I think you may have been referring to shtml which I do not use as I agree it's damn slow. A properly written and implemented servlet is one of the purest forms of C/S you're likley to find (cue flames).
Speaking of shtml, what are the benefits and liabilities? Our webmaster uses shtml extensively and I had always thought it was slow.
