As stated in the SuSE 6.3 manual: /System.map contains kernel symbols which are needed by the modules to launch kernel functions correctly.
I don't have my 6.3 manual available right now, but modules don't need
System.map, as symbols are available via /proc/ksyms. The only places I know
that System.map is need is for decoding kernel oopses via ksymoops and for
klogd to be able to 'translate' kernel messages.
So it's entirely possible to delete System.map although I'd not see any need
for doing that.
