Is it possible to backup partitions on to cd-rw? I have some partitions greater than 650mb and wondered if there is software that backups over 2 or more cd-rw? I believe backups to zip disks can span over 2 or more disks, does the same apply to cd-rw?
I don't believe it's possible without a more elaborate procedure. Programs like tar assume that the backup medium consists of volumes that can be written to directly. But you can only write to a CD via a program such as cdrecord that transfers a filesystem image to a CD. I've contemplated the very same problem and concluded that the best thing to do is to split the backup into two or more subdirectories, each containing less than 650MB. I'd be very happy to be shown to be wrong. There are other interesting backup-related issues. For instance, it might be better to write a single tar file to the CD if you're planning any kind of incremental strategy, since tar has the ability to include only those files written or modified after a particular time, and there's no way I've seen to simulate that through mkisofs.
