That's a rdev bug, /dev/snd is a danling symlink into /proc, where the alsa driver isn't loaded. If you don't use alsa, remove the link.

Thank you Thorsten, that was it. As for expect, I copied the
necessary files (expect and the tcl7.6 files) from 6.1, since the expect
from my 6.3 hanged. By the way - I looked into the *.spm packages but did
not find expect ; is it included with tcl ?
