Perhaps you don't realize just how much I appreciated and valued your notes to me about this whole gcc/egcs thing.
An unfortunate thing about Linux (which of course has many fortunate things) is that ordinary users who aren't developers but want to install new software are all too often forced to deal with the arcana of differences among compilers and libraries - and sometimes the differences among versions of supporting packages too. Most of us have had the painful experience of attempting to build and install frobozz-1.2.8.8 3, only to discover that it requires quigmire-3.9.12b rather than the quigmire-3.9.12a we had previously installed - which in turn requires blignack-2.01, available only from the author's website, which has recently been relocated. Every bit of elucidation on these subjects is much appreciated.
